This esteemed cathedral occupies a site of profound historical importance, where the first religious temple of Toledo was established during Roman times, succeeded by a Visigothic basilica.

For three centuries, this location was home to the magnificent "aljama" mosque constructed by Muslim artisans, which was subsequently transformed for Christian worship in 1086.

Just two years later, it was granted the designation of "Catedral Primada," signifying its role as the principal cathedral of the first diocese in the former Kingdom of Spain. Although the current Gothic structure's construction commenced in 1227 under Archbishop Don Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada and during the reign of Fernando III the Saint, its historical significance has endured over the centuries.

This extraordinary site continues to be celebrated as a paramount cultural treasure, embodying the rich heritage of Toledo as the DIVES TOLEDANA.
